text-to-image generation is all the rage right now and its almost as much of an art form to craft a useable prompt as it is to draw the images yourself. these images represent some of my favorite and most interesting images that ive created using currently available tools.
COPPER SQUARES – 36 square pieces of copper of equal size placed on the floor in a grid with no spaces between the copper pieces – based on a work by carl andre i was experimenting to see how well ai would be able to follow the directions of conceptual artist.
NEVER SEEN BEFORE COLOR – a color nobody has ever seen before right now. – the results of this prompt were very unexpected.
WALRUS SPEEDBOAT – a walrus vampire in high detail silk screen style driving a speed boat. – based on a current event of the time.
TRUCKIN’ – Arrows of neon and flashing marquees out on Main Street. Chicago, New York, Detroit and it’s all on the same street. Your typical city involved in a typical daydream. – an interpretation of lyrics from the grateful dead song truckin’.
NEW SPEEDWAY BOOGIE – hauling items for organized crime, 2022, realistic. – another interpretation of grateful dead song lyrics, although not literally the lyrics from the song but a ai optimized version of them.
LANGUAGE IS NOT TRANSPARENT – mel bochners language is not transparent as interpreted by ai. this work (the original) is one of my favorites because it has so many subtle meanings. one of the things ive noticed after working on this is that ai often struggles with creating readable text.
SCARLET BEGONIAS – She had rings on her fingers and bells on her shoes. And I knew, without askin’, she was into the blues. She wore scarlet begonias tucked into her curls. I knew right away she was not like other girls, other girls. – the imagery of grateful dead songs as imagined by ai is really interesting to me because their lyrics are so descriptive.
BLUE AND GREEN #3– the color blue and the color green. – a very rothko like experience came from this prompt. though it has more texture than a rothko would, its still very similar.
ONE TO ONE-HUNDRED – the numbers 1 to 100, individual numbers, minimalist. – what do numbers look like to ai? can all the numbers from 1 to 100 be displayed together? this is the result.
SOL LEWITT, WALL DRAING #579 – Three concentric arches. The outside one is blue; the middle red; and the inside one is yellow. – this one was tough for the ai to follow the directions. it looks absolutely nothing like the original.
SOL LEWITT, WALL DRAWING #766 – twenty-one isometic cubes of various sizes each with color ink washes superimposed. – i think ai did an alright job on following the instructions on this one, although the results look more like rocks and minerals than colored cubes, its pretty close.
SOL LEWITT, LINE DRAWING #273 – A 6” grid covering 7 walls. Lines from corners, sides, and center of the walls to random points on the grid. 1st wall: Red lines from the midpoints of four sides; 2nd wall: Blue lines from the four corners; 3rd wall: Yellow lines from the center; 4th wall: Red lines from the midpoints of four sides, blue lines from four corners; 5th wall: Red lines from the midpoints of four sides, yellow lines from the center; 6th wall: Blue lines from four corners, yellow lines from the center; 7th wall: Red lines from the midpoints of four sides, blue lines from four corners, yellow lines from the center. Each wall has an equal number of lines. (The number of lines and their length are determined by the draftsman.). – this one was very hard for the ai to understand, probably due to the need for multiple walls.
WINE ADVERTISEMENT – a magainze advertisement for a bottle of wine or champaigne with some text describing the bottle and promenant generic wine type branding on the bottle label. – how well can ai create your typical wine ad you might see in a magaine?
BATTLE OF THE DANS – dan flavin vs. dan graham. – two of my favorite light artist works mashed together. I really like this one.
NEW SPEEDWAY BOOGIE #2- In the heat of the sun a man died of cold. Keep on coming or stand and wait, With the sun so dark and the hour so late. – another interpretation of grateful dead song lyrics.
SCHEMATIC DRAWING OF A CAKE – schematic drawing, blueprint of a cake. – this image is part of the imagery for the terrible cake party game.
SOL LEWITT, WALL DRAWING #386 – Stars with three, four, five, six, seven, eight, and nine points, drawn with a light tone India ink wash inside, an India ink wash outside, separated by a 6-inch (15 cm) white band. – another look at how well ai can follow a conceptual artist instructions.
RED, BLUE AND YELLOW #2 – the color red, the color blue and the color yellow. – how does ai see color? in this case, how does it see the colors red, blue and yellow.
TERRIBLE CAKE PARTY – the words “terrible cake party” in a oil painting style. – the struggle with text continues. but you can get the gist of what its trying to get across.
TODDLER LOOKING OUT CAR WINDOW – an excited toddler girl looking out a car window, illustration, kids book. – an image from a children’s book i’m working on about a little girl on a car ride to school.
SOL LEWITT, TEN-THOUSAND TEN INCH LINES – Ten thousand lines about 10 inches (25 cm) long, covering a wall evenly. – this piece is overwhelming when seen in real life so an ai interpretation was interesting to see the results. i don’t feel this does the work justice as the lines the ai produces are not all the same length nor are they spaced properly according to the instructions.
